YMCA Aquatics Programs
Ever since the YMCA opened the world’s first indoor swimming pool in 1885 it has been a pioneer in water activities for people of all ages. Today at the Akron Area YMCA, you can do virtually anything you can think of in the water! Four of our membership branches have pools (Canal Square, Green, Lake Anna and Riverfront) and certified lifeguards always guard our pools.
Between the three pools, you can enjoy many hours of recreation or lap swimming during our open/lap swim times, as well as a wide variety of instructor-led activities like adult, youth and preschool swimming lessons, scuba and water exercise.

Progressive Teen and Adult
In 1907, the first group swimming lessons began at the Detroit YMCA. Today the Akron Area YMCA continues that tradition by teaching people of all ages how to swim.
Our swim lesson programs are progressive (no matter what the student’s age, he/she can continue to build skills) and student focused with low student-to-teacher ratios.
We teach children and adults of all ages—even offering a unique preschool-only progressive program with four different levels. All of our classes emphasize water safety.
